Customer Review: Jessica Livingston's Founders at Work is a collection of interviews with an interesting array of entrepreneurs, engineers, and tactful business people (many being all three) who started successful companies in the high technology field. The main focus of the interviews is not necessarily what the company has become, but how it had gotten there. Livingston seemed most concerned with having the people she interviewed focus mainly on the start up days when they didn't know when the next paycheck was coming, or if their "crazy" idea would even work and be something that people would use. Through asking questions about how they received funding, hired new employees, and dealt with possible takeovers and competitors, Livingston is able to share with the reader an interesting glimpse of what makes these people "tick", as well as how a startup goes from someone's garage to a well respected company in record time.
Livingston does a wonderful job of allowing these people to tell their own stories, which gives wonderful insight to both themselves and their companies. Her questions are usually short and to the point, yet highly relevant. She certainly knows her history and comes off as very prepared in what questions she asks, and when she asks them. When interviewing Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer Inc., she lets him ramble on about different soldering techniques, processor specs, and experiences with writing his own code. But within this jumble of numbers and archaic processor specs, we begin to see what made him so successful. It is amazing, that nearly thirty years later, he is able to recant how many bytes went into the first Apple computer, what processor model it used and how much it cost. Livingston does a wonderful job of teasing this out of Wozniak, and many other people that she had interviewed for the book. Most people would either cut him off and ask another question about Steve Jobs, or never include the long paragraphs of technical terms that Wozniak had listed when determining what to put in the book. It seems as if she took it to heart when many of these "tech gurus" told her how important attention to detail is. Wozniak gives us little nuggets of his true character, hidden between the technical jargon that Livingston wisely decides to leave in.
Livingston does not shy away from including many technical terms. This may scare off the casual reader, but for many it is a way that you can fully appreciate someone ...

Customer Review: Skip the Small Business Administration or state small business websites. Forget the "For Dummies" or "Idiots" guides. This is the one book you need to read if you're serious about starting a business.
From taxes to finances to planning entry into a market, Nolo's book covers the gamut. Starting a business sounds intimidating, but it's really not...if you have this book by your side. The CD-ROM has a couple of useful files, but to really get the most out of the book you may have to follow their recommendations for further reading. It's a great place to start, however.
And be sure to order the latest edition, as laws change! [I reviewed the 5th edition.]

Customer Review: This is the very first book I've ever wanted to take the time to review.
My expectations were low looking at the title. The yield was quite different. Scott Fox very simply details EVERYTHING that you need to get an e-business up and running. I'm not a business person at all and the book was an easy read for me.
The only thing I would add, would be to take Mr. Fox's recommendation and check his website out regularly ([...]). Even though his book was published recently, he has changed his recommendation for some recommended services (such as website building companies). He notes this in his book; his recommendations are dynamic, not static!

Customer Review: Nutshell review - The author defines an entrepreneur as anyone who starts, manages and assumes the risk of running a business. Keep this definition in mind when reading the book because it is against this definition that the book proceeds to analyze and argue against 67 "myths" commonly held about entrepreneurs. It is well written with each chapter presenting the arguments against various beliefs and ends with a point form summary of the myths dispelled (this last is very useful for finding the key-points later). The author cites various data and clearly argues his case and the whole book can be read in just a few hours. It certainly contains many insights into the small business owner and is worthwhile reading for that alone.
Personal comment: If we hold so many different ideas (i.e. myths) to be true about entrepreneurs then perhaps we and the author are thinking of different things. A key point the author makes about entrepreneurs is that most of them have apparently no desire to grow their business beyond a one-man show. Another finding the author makes is that most do not start a business as a desire to make more money, or for the thrill of starting a business, or any other such reason. The main reason entrepreneurs start a business is apparently to avoid working for someone else! These traits do not fit at all with my notion of what it is to be an entrepreneur. Perhaps one should separate those who just start their own business to avoid working for someone else (self-employed) and those that are driven and inspired to create and grow a truly great business.

This book was the first I read to try and get a better understanding of the business world. It did not disappoint! Steven does an excellent job of getting his knowledge across to people in a manner easy to understand and follow. My venture is still in the development stages but I am going to utilize the knowledge I gained from this book to project my idea upwards!

Customer Review: I won't say too much... just that if you are thinking in starting your own online community, or a website of any kind, you simply HAVE TO READ IT...this book helped me very much to have a very good business model for my community... if you're starting an own website, I should also recommend Word of Mouth Marketing by Andy Sernovitz... it is just the best complement I can think of.
