I think it would be great for a first timer, as it has a lot about how to start a new business in there. Well Miles Burke in his new book The Principles of Successful Freelancing discusses just that. Miles is no stranger to making the leap into world of freelancing having done it three times.
When I first picked up this book, I'll be honest, I was a little skeptical. But I found this is a good book. It's well written with an entertaining layback style all it's own. I can just imagine Miles sitting back in a cafe or coffee shop chatting about freelancing. You could easily read this book on 4-5 hour plane flight.
This book is squarely aimed at the person who is considering getting into freelancing or has just started. It covers off all aspects of the freelancers life cycle, such as:
* From starting out and a hard look at oneself, are you cut out to be a freelancer.
* Preparing for the transition from regular work to freelancing, and all the things you really need to think about (but don't).
* Finances, making sure you really do stay in business and keep a positive cash flow.
* Productivity, time tracking, getting into that productivity zone and not being distracted.
* Selling, winning work and understanding how to sell. Something all freelances fear at some stage.
* Customer service, or keeping the client, project management made simple, and dealing with difficult clients.
* Lifestyle, work habits, life balance are discussed, this is huge area that I know freelancers cut corners on.
* Expansion, life beyond freelancing, the final stepping stone on the way for a freelancer, be that back into employment, or expansion using outsourcing or your own staff.
You know what's really good and annoying too (well for me) with this book; it is just full of all those tips and tricks that I just wish some freelancing mentor had told me all those years ago in the previous century when I started freelancing.
I enjoyed this book to the point that I found myself nodding and smiling as Miles waxed on with another aspect of freelancing, pointing out the pitfalls along the way. And sometimes I was wincing as I realised that after 14 years in the game I've still got a few things even I can improve on.

Customer Review: From the title "entrepreneurial mindset", I had expected something else from this book. Now I realize that I would have been much better of with a book written on entrepreneurs (such as Hard Drive) or by entrepreneurs (such as Bloomberg).
There is strictly no entrepreneurial mindset to capture from this book written in a theoretical way - and by the end of the book, you understand that it is addressed to managers in big corporations who need some kind of "task plan" so as to become intrapreneurs.
I had a hard time not to skip at the end of each chapters where there is a short summary of the tasks to take. This book has a couple of interesting strategies, all (thanks God) reprensented in clear figures (the writing is really not inspiring). But I would argue that a book on marketing (the Portable MBA in marketing for example) has much more value to bring to someone who wants to start a business.
In conclusion, I would first recommend a book on entrepreneurs such as Swoosh or Hard Drive before you read "the entrepreneurial mindset" so as not lose interest in entrepreneurship to quickly.

Customer Review: It would be nice if the writer who pulled together this inadequate book were to rename it with some degree of honesty. "Staffing" can also include permanent placement or recruiting. There is NOTHING in this book about those. This is solely about clerical and industrial temps.
Those who wish to read a seriously comprehensive book on recruiting/permanent placement/executive search (but NOT temps)should see the 300+ page hardcover book "Search and Placement! A Handbook for Success" by exceedingly well-qualified industry authorities Larry Nobles and Steven Finkel.
This book is falsely named. Totally.

Customer Review: Poppy King's self-deprecating approach is refreshing for an entrepreneur. She is very open about her periods of self doubt and how she overcame those challenging times. She shares her mistakes and makes suggestions on how to avoid the same pitfalls. Reading this is like having a very close, successful friend thoughtfully take you under her wing. Poppy is an excellent mentor. The one thing I keep wondering: does she really know how much she has truly accomplished? I don't think she appreciates the magnitude of her accomplishments. Lucky for her audience-she believes anyone can accomplish the same and she wants to help! For people who want to judge-I'd like to pose the question: What were you doing at age 18? After becoming a huge success before the age of 20, she could have easily blown the money and "retired" to the beaches of Australia- however-she stuck it out in the boardroom and is still thriving. Poppy has staying power. She knows how to adapt. She knows how to write an engaging story. Thank you, Poppy!
