The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do Abo... by Michael E. Gerber Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: This book reads more like a romance novel than a business book. The author has some good ideas, but nothing new or earth shattering. The big put off for me is how he "interacts" with Sarah who owns a pie making business. Starring into each others eyes and her 15 minute description of lying in bed as a child dreaming about wild horses, which I can't find any connection to business. This would be a much shorter book, and better, if the filler was removed and just business basics were left.
With that being said the actual business parts do have some good ideas and ways to look at situations in a different light. I would recommend it as decent reading if you get it at a good price.
Reality Check: The Irreverent Guide to Outsmarting, Outmanaging, and Outmarke... by Guy Kawasaki Amazon Price: $18.65
Customer Review: Guy Kawasaki addresses in a fun and entertaining way several issues that range from how to start and run a company to how to communicate and how to find meaning in life. The style varies a lot from story telling, advice lists, digressions and interviews. The reason I'm only giving it three stars it's because the book is rather long (over 450 pages) and unfocused - at the end of the book you wonder what the book is really about. It provides an interesting reading nevertheless.
The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Start... by Guy Kawasaki Amazon Price: $16.89
Customer Review: I've been going through the Guy Kawasaki portfolio of books in order to improve my ability to communicate effectively and this is the most useful book I've come across yet. This covers all of the bases from idea conception to how to pitch to how to raise funds. Half way through the book I began thinking, "I should write a book about all of the useful information I am picking up from all of these various sources," but by the end of the book, I realized Guy had already done it.
AUDIENCE
I highly recommend that you be working on a project before reading this. I found myself completing a chapter and then rushing to my pitch or project plan to implement the new ideas I had just discovered. This was great as a user manual to help the process and targeted the things I was currently struggling with as well as gave me ideas about what I should be working on.
The Art of the Start is now on my bookcase in the section reserved for re-read. I intend to return to it periodically so I can take away new lessons as I am ready to learn them.
As a footnote, I followed this book with Made to Stick by the Heath brothers which was a great next read... review coming soon.

Guerrilla Marketing, 4th edition: Easy and Inexpensive Strategies for Making ... by Jay Conrad Levinson Amazon Price: $9.68
Customer Review: This is a must have book for anyone who's starting or running a small business. Levinson includes tons of tactics and strategies that any small business owner can benefit from and best of all can personalize to their own advantages. I have lots of pages dog tagged in my copy, because I know I'll be referring to them again and again and again. I also like Levinson's style of writing; he makes readers instantly comfortable with the concepts, while also urging them to incorporate those concepts into how they do business. You can't go wrong with Guerrilla Marketing...what you can learn is how to make your business successful while spending as little as possible.
Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More by Joe Vitale, Ihaleakala Hew, Ph.D Len Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: Joe Vitale jumps on the Huna bandwagon with this poorly executed example of "McHuna" which is really nothing more than a very thinly disguised advertisment for his next marketing venture. While being exhorted with the importance and fullness of the present moment, Joe informs us that his focus has changed to a more Zen-like eternal now instead of his usual list of powerhouse marketing genius goals as-yet-to-be-manifested. Meanwhile, we get to look at him standing blithely in front of his very expensive sportscar while being informed that he has a magical symbol invented by the co-author (freely shared in the book) to make him "clean, clean and clear", or something to that effect. Well, it never hurts to have an order of Scientology on the side to go with your McHuna, LOL.
It only took me 10 minutes to get the gist of this book without actually buying it (take that, Joe) and only 15 minutes to get the stink off of my hands.
Craft, Inc.: Turn Your Creative Hobby into a Business by Meg Mateo Ilasco Amazon Price: $16.95
Customer Review: This book is a great reference guide and is very easy to read. Anyone thinking of starting a business in crafts should be encouraged to read this book!!
If you have read previous Sir Richard Branson's books; you have read most of it already. However, this book, "Business Stripped Bare: Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur", Sir Richard Branson focused solely on the business side of his life. Actually, all his life is about business! Unlike other business book writers, he has the first-hand experience in Virgin. In this book, he covered lots of topics. A quote from the book "So all I can do for you now (and I firmly believe that this is all anyone can honestly do) is map the territory I've seen. The good news is, I've covered a lot of territory."
Contents
- Introduction
- People: Find Good People - Set Them Free
In this chapter, he generally wrote about the culture in Virgin.
- Brand: Flying the Flag
Richard Branson wrote exclusively on Virgin Blue in Australia and how he fought hard to beat the competition and established the Virgin brand there.
- Delivery: Special Delivery
Among other things, he started the chapter with Virgin Trains and how it reshaped the industry in UK. He moved onto how he run Virgin Records and how he started Virgin Mobile in UK and in the US.
- Learning from Mistakes and Setbacks: Damage Report
Failure to acquire the bank, Northern Rock, is the focus of this chapter. Richard Branson is also subjected to mistake and he wrote on how to bounce back.
- Innovation: A Driver for Business
Virgin Galactic is going to be huge and tell me after you read this chapter that you don't want to travel into space!
- Entrepreneurs and Leadership: Holding on and Letting Go
He wrote about his experience with Nelson Mandela and how he set up Global Elders to tackle the humanity issues around the world.
- Social Responsibility: Just Business
This chapter is fantastically inspiring. He separated it into two parts. The first is about his activities to relieve Africa from HIV and Aids. He also wrote about Bill Gates and how they shared philanthropy to make the difference in the world. The other part is the climate change issue. You heard it all before but instead of pouring fear to you, Richard Branson offers you hope.
- Epilogue: Success

The Exceptional Presenter: A Proven Formula to Open Up and Own the Room by Timothy J. Koegel Amazon Price: $14.93
Customer Review: The Exceptional Presenter teaches any Speaker how to go from delivering a speech to presenting a speech. This fun, lighthearted read is full of great tools and practial approaches to turning your speaking ability into an art rather than a reading session.
The way you look and physically present is featured as the high points of the speaking talent. This is not only true, but well identified in this book.
I recommend this book over all others, if you desire to become a speaker that is remembered for who you are, rather than what you said. In that case you could be reading the dictionary and make it sound like a dissertation on world peace!
Trump University Commercial Real Estate 101: How Small Investors Can Get Star... by David Lindahl, Trump University, Donald J. Trump Amazon Price: $18.45
Customer Review: I have read all of Dave Lindahl's books. I also bought his course. Of all the so called "Guru's" out there, I find him to be the best! Commercial properties are for "Investor's", Residential properties are for "Home Owners". His book is very refreshing & covers the basics & beyond. I have been a Broker for 28 years, mainly Land & Commercial Mortgages. I highly recommend his material.
