In The Total Money Makeover, Ramsay outlines how ordinary Americans can get rid of their debt and build wealth. Stating that personal finance is 20% head knowledge and 80% personal behavior, Ramsay believes that being debt-free and rich is not as difficult as most people believe and should be a goal of everyone.
In the first few chapters of the book, Ramsay discusses different myths surrounding money and debt. In these chapters, Ramsay addresses such myths as, "You need a credit card to build credit," "Debt is a tool to create prosperity" and "Leasing cars is what sophisticated people do."
After Ramsay is finished dealing with an assortment of such myths, he starts with the essence of his book: how people can become debt-free and build wealth. Ramsay emphatically believes the first two steps in this process for the individual or family is to stop using credit and creating a budget (and sticking to it). If one doesn't have the money to purchase the product or service outright, Ramsay thinks people should save up their pennies and dollars until they do. This step is essential to Ramsay's money makeover plan and the rest of the book is built around this and other behavior modifications.
For the budget, Ramsay recommends using an envelope system. In this system the allotted cash is placed in labeled envelopes at the beginning in each month. When the envelope is empty no more money can be spent on the item until the next month. Ramsay admits the system is simple, but he also knows it will work. Using statistics and studies to back up his claim, Ramsay explains that psychologically it is much easier to overspend when using a credit card instead of cash.

Following Suze's advise over the years has provided me with the education required to be prepared for what lies ahead. The Expenses breakdown chart is a very helpful tool to see where you can cut back. I also loved the format in which this book was written, it can be used as a reference tool and you can read based on your area of concern be it credit, 401k, retirement etc. I think everyone should not only read this, but live by it!

Customer Review: My husband & i got the 1990 version for our honeymoon in High season, hot July of that year. We could literally see the crowds just a few minutes behind us. We estimate the book / info / plans saved us 2 hours a day. That trip. And on the subsequent dozen trips with updated versions.
The important thing to remember is this needs to be read BEFORE you reserve a hotel or even tell the kids. WDW is an expensive proposition and this book tells you ways to budget your money, time, energy. Totally the best in this arena - the official guide is practically a souviner program by comparison.
This book is great at helping you:
a) decide IF go - & how much you will spend
(if Santa at the mall freaks your toddler - what will a 6' rodent do? and if all they recall is the pool - maybe next year.)
b) when to go - what factors to consider (school vs. crowds?)
c) where to stay (big decision if you have small kids or older adults or a limited budget - or me!)
d) deciding on a plan for touring the parks. Some complain about the authoritative tone - hey - just read the first few chapters and you can understand at least WHY you are broiling under the FL/ CA sun for hours. It's your choice - make it an informed one and you'll be better prepared to roll with the punches. That is the core message here - Have a plan or ...
The place has changed a lot in the 18 years and the book has gotten a bit overwhelming. Read it to make decisions then slice out the relevant (or irrelevant) pages for hauling around.
BTW: everyone complains about the food cost - but i think it is not as bad as others make out. sure you can tailgate back to your car - but that's between your foot leather and your wallet. It is no more expensive than food @ concert or sports event. & you can't beat the character buffets if you have a fan.
& BTW from the rather AR: WDW is the 43 sq. mile property. Magic Kingdom is the cute park with the characters IN WDW.

Customer Review: Change means taking people out of their comfort zone. Change is painful. Countless self-help books and score of motivational speakers would tell you to embrace change, and that change is good/what one needs to grow/ [substitute your own here]. May be, but all of that is just sugar coating. The best you can argue is probably that some change is less painful than the others. Some people have trouble changing from having two sugar in their coffee to one. You know it's good for you but it's a pain.
After studying large businesses, John P. Kotter deduced that any major organisational change must followed these 8 steps, and in sequence.
1.Establishing a sense of urgency
2.Build a group with senior management support
3.Developing a vision and strategy
4.Constantly communicate the change vision
5.Empower employee to take action, encourage employee to take calculated risk
6.Generate short-terms wins, celebrate wins to build momentum
7.Use increased credibility to propagate more change throughout the organisation
8.Don't stop. Keep pushing so the change can become a habit.
Kotter wrote that outstanding leaders takes a long term view, decades or even centuries can be meaningful time frames for major change. Some says the book is outdated. New forms of communication, and the Internet have change the way people interact with one another. I still like simplicity of the 8 processes. The problem is getting senior and middle management to buy into it. There are no shortage of company paying lip service to "empowering" employee or think communicating change as a half day training session, one time only. I do, however, believe a decade long change program is unrealistic.
Technical people hate words like vision and strategy. Weasel words like these are too easily regurgitated out when management have no idea. Kotter did a great job changing my perception by telling a story:
Three groups of people looking for a safe resting place during a rain-storm. The first leader gave order to his group to "Get Up and Follow Me, Now!", a few did. The 2nd leader provided detailed instructions for the group - stand up, march in this direction, two feet apart, stop before the tree...etc. In the 3rd group, someone tells the others: "It's going to rain. Why don't we go over there by the tree. We'll stay dry, and have fresh apples for lunch."

The topics were exactly what I wanted... most people don't concern themselves with the distribution side of the IRA, but rather only with the contribution and investment side. Ed discusses this mostly in the context of estate planning and figuring out how to maximize your contributions. If you plan on depleting your retirement plan and not passing it to your heirs, there is much in this book that you'll pass over. However, if you have a large retirement plan and intend on either
a) being able to pass to heirs
b) have to pass to heirs
then you'll want to read this book.

Customer Review: Google has always struck me as being a twenty first century company. With its 'Don't Be Evil' mantra, countless employee benefits and constant experimental beta programs, it appears they are digitizing the world's information through the funnel of one big mysterious algorithm. While reading Planet Google I was constantly reminded of ways in which Google has affected my life. I used Google maps on a daily basis as a delivery driver in Orlando, I used the satellite imagery to see how close a house was to the ocean before renting it and five of my books are available through the Google Books program. My latest novel was researched largely through the Google search engine, my videos are on YouTube and I have a Gmail account that gets checked daily. This intertwining usage made it all the more fascinating to find out where these programs began. However, this apparent loyalty does not color my opinions. As a book Planet Google has much to be desired.
While author Randall Stross gives a snapshot of the company and its many ambitions, he does so from a distance. I can only imagine that he had very little contact with the owners or engineers that keep Google ticking. His descriptions are dispassionately technical but meant for the lay person thus failing on both fronts. Further, the human side of the story is missing entirely. If someone had to slavishly sacrifice for this company or its accomplishments, that sacrifice has gone unrecorded.
For those who know nothing at all about Google this book is a usefull first step but a broader text will be needed in the future for the sake for more accurately understanding this technological and economic giant.

Customer Review: It is August of 1997, the markets have just started their gyrations, Robert Kiyosaki, Donald Trump, David Bach and others are on a Larry King panel to discuss personal finance and current market conditions. David Bach said that the reason the markets were depressed was that the market makers had gone on holiday. They will return, he said, and the markets will go back up.
That is the kind of information that is in "Automatic Millionaire" and if you follow it, you will lose a fortune in the stock market and have all of your net worth tied up in the most illiquid purchase of all, your house.
I bought the audio book, read by David Bach, long before the current meltdown and couldn't believe what I was hearing.
First: there is nothing "Automatic" about becoming a millionaire. Even the laziest person has to look at a financial statement or rebalance their retirement accounts once a year. According to The Millionaire Next Door wealthy people pay attention to their financial statements and consistently engage in certain behaviors that lead to wealth.
Second: your house is not an asset, therefore it is better to use the money that would go for extra payments (to pay down principle according to Bach) to buy a rental property to generate cashflow.
Third: Latte Factors are nice, it was in this book that he coined the phrase, but the Latte Factor is just a catch phrase that obscures the need for greater financial literacy and sound long term financial habits. That phrase has left people cutting out their goodies rather than looking holistically at their financial picture.
Automatic Millionaire was written during boom times when the market was supposed to always go up.
Here is the litmus test for financial advice. If the bottom falls out of the market or the basic assumptions of the book (that real estate prices will always go up, for example) are not true, is the advice still good?
The answer is no...so I would recommend a pass on the book.
