Customer Review: this is an understated gem of a book. typically you find the core of a book lying within a few chapters but I felt this book was very balanced, each chapter contributing a different perspective to how to create clients for life.
the authors illustrated each principle with a real example and its the lives of the great men / women that provides genuine inspiration to go further.
as an advertising professional, I like the framework presented here very much, it provides a practical basis for creating solid, long-term client relationships, no fuss, the real meat.

The book has a lot of very practical techniques and advice on how to dramatically improve and increase your business. I would recommend it to anyone in an organization regardless of wether or not they come into direct contact with customers. Customer Review: Mr. Sebastian shows amazing savvy and passion for improving brands and people. The book is an excellent tool for coaching "professionals in transition" (which I have done for quite some time). It is clear, concise and a no nonsense approach to optimizing situations with clients and or prospective business partners/employers. Many of the techniques are applicable to a number of life situations that absolutely make it a "WIN - WIN" for all. I've first hand seen him do a presentation about it to Univ. of Cincinnati marketing students and his passion to teach and thoroughly mentor people is incredible! The group was totally engaged and enthralled with his professionalism and the knowledge shared through great book chapter examples! I've personally recommended it to libraries and other renowned university business schools. It is also a very cost effective product as well and it is my understanding the proceeds go to charity. Customer Review: Sobel identifies three keys to earning lifelong client loyalty: (1) give them great advice, (2) exceed their expectations, and (3) build trust. The first chapter of Making Rain is a confusing introduction to those three key ideas, with hazy, overlapping definitions.
Most of the book is an elaboration on the three keys to earning client loyalty. Sobel uses anecdotes from his consulting experience and from his varied knowledge of world history to try to illuminate his theme. Some of the anecdotes are right on point, some are far wide of the point; some are illuminating but most are superficial. In fact, Sobel wouldn't have been too far off if he had named his book "101 Superficial Anecdotes About Building Client Loyalty."
In general, there is not much here that is fresh, nothing at all that could be considered breakthrough. Still, some chapters are useful for reviewing fundamentals that you've already been exposed to in many other books, seminars, and training courses. Chapter 7, for example, sets forth "six major factors that influence whether and to what extent [a prospective client might like you] at a first meeting." They are: similarity, familiarity, positive association, praising what's good, openness, and rapport. Each of the six factors is supported by research and anecdotes.
Chapter 15, "How to Identify Client Needs," presents "seven strategies that can help you get in touch with your clients' needs." Again, none of these strategies is seminal or ground-breaking, but they enunciate sound fundamentals.
Chapter 18 is one of the most valuable: "Five Ways to Grow Your Client Relationships." Most notable are the following three:
* Migrate to new issues where your expertise is valuable.
* Migrate to working for other executives in the same company.
* Help your client with implementation [after you give them great advice].
Because the book is disjointed, you can jump around to chapters that pique your curiosity, maybe learn a few new tricks, and brush up on fundamentals.

Customer Review: Just finished "Start Your Own Information Consultant Business" and I feel like I have a grasp of what the career of an information broker might be like, at least in general terms.
As a person interested in careers in Information Studies, I am always browsing books that have to do with various outlying professions, other than the typical librarian or archival tracks and this seems to be one of them.
For a quick read, this title is perfect. It gives a realistic look at the numbers when it comes to the career, as well as being optimistic enough about the possibilities to still keep a person interested. Though there were some personal details from interviews with real information consultants thrown in, it would have been nice to see some more focus on actual information consultants, i.e. interviews, day-logs etc. As well as more descriptions of actual projects or jobs (there was one made-up example) that a person in the profession might be asked to do would have been useful for me.
Overall, I would recommend browsing this book at a local library but not buying it. It has some good basic information and a useful appendix (filled with organizations and other resources about information consulting) but not enough to make it worth keeping at home.
Note: Due to the 2004 publication date of this book, chapters 4 and 5, which deal with technology (hardware, software), are somewhat outdated. Use them at your own risk.
