Small Business Books

Customer Review: A few years ago, the company I was with purchased copies of Good to Great for managers. I was blown away by the information the book contained. The book went against my thinking at the time. In quick order, I changed my mind-set about several topics and found my `new ways' were more productive to my employer and my career.
Perplexed, I wondered why the executive management of the organization didn't practice the theories advanced in this book. They were after all, the ones that had purchased copies for their managers. Sad to say, the company began a downward spiral and several divisions were sold - myself included.
To my surprise, my new CEO was a huge fan of Good to Great and referred to it often. Outside of his office was a copy of the book permanently resting on a coffee table. In my good fortune, I learned that this CEO and the organization, took the lessons from Good to Great to heart. The company grew and my career grew.
I highly recommend this book to anyone in management. I have included it on my Amazon lists and my Amazon guides. I have stated this is, quite simply, the best book on management available. Michael L. Gooch, SPHR Author of Wingtips with Spurs

Customer Review: The book's title is provocative on purpose, but Ferriss delivers excellent ideas about life and work. You don't have to agree with everything he says, and you don't have to implement all his suggestions to benefit. For me, the point of the book is to look at your work differently. When you do that, you can make different decisions that will benefit you, as opposed to the instinctive "work, get promoted, retire" plan.
Examples: 1. I was trying to get a management job, to get more money and more power in my company. Now I realize that job would decrease my hourly pay and limit my ability to enjoy life. 2. I want to move to a different city, but fear moving my family, cutting roots, only to get to the new place and realize it was a mistake. Now I'm planning to rent a house in the new city and go live for two weeks or more, doing my job as I normally do. My family will know if they like living there, and my boss's experience of my services will not change.
Is this book for everyone? No book is for everyone. However, most of us have to work and most of us would rather be doing something else. If Ferriss's ideas sound good to you, but you can't implement them now, you can move toward a position where you can implement them. He's realistic about this. He lays out methods for training yourself to work remotely, as well as a detailed plan for negotiating with your boss.
I can't validate all of Tim Ferriss's claims, but I can confirm that some of what he recommends in this book IS POSSIBLE. I'm doing it, and I'm not an internet millionaire or an ivy-league graduate.
I recommend the print version, rather than the audiobook, because of all the URLs he includes for further study. You may want to check out Ferriss's talk at Google, on YouTube. He addresses some of the ethical and moral objections people bring up in the negative reviews here.

Customer Review: This book is great for anyone who has been toying with the idea of starting their own business.
I've been kicking around the idea of opening a pub in my city for a few years now. Since real estate has slowed so greatly in recent months (my current career) it has occurred to me that my passionate desire to open a pub should be more seriously explored.
"The Art of the Start", although not concentrating on pub opening, (How many books actually do?) does provide boatloads of useful information that any entrepreneur, no matter the business, can use. Guy Kawasaki informs and reforms ideas and misconceptions I've had about starting my own business, all in a very "Guy Kawasaki" way. It should also be noted that the foundation for his success plan seems to me to be one of a high standard of ethics and selflessness. I can honestly say that its contents have truly lit a fire in me to pursue my dream.
Now that I finished the book I will be recommending it to my mother who currently has a new business of her own. She'll have to buy her own however, mines not going anywhere.

Customer Review: I have read probably about 20 or so books along these "getting rich" lines and I have to say that this is either my #1 or #2 favorite. (The other one that would vie for the top spot is How to be a Billioniare: Proven Strategies from the Titans of Wealth). Mr. Dennis's book is entertaining, inspiring, and chalk-full of high-yield advice and pearls of wisdom that any aspiring mogul should know. I read it on my BlackBerry and highlighted a lot and I plan to regularly go back and review this material as I believe it will truly benefit me on my quest for wealth.
To be objective I do disagree with Mr. Dennis on a few minor points:
- I do think it is possible to attain great wealth without completely sacrificing your life, youth, and relationships
- I have a lower threshold to relinquish equity in exchange for capital and management expertise (e.g. VC capital injection) -- after all, what good is 100% equity in a small company? I'd rather have 10% in a behemoth. (BG only has about 10% in MSFT).
The # of points I agree with Mr. Dennis on are innumerable.
Don't think. Read this book! Bravo Mr. Dennis!
